The Ten Essentials For Hiking (+ some extras)

The Ten hiking essentials

When it comes to spending time in nature, being prepared is key!

In addition to a working knowledge of the Leave No Trace principals, here are some hiking essentials that everyone should consider bringing along for the adventure:

  1. Navigation tools: Map, compass, Alltrails reference, (optional) GPS device
  2. Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a trusty hat
  3. Insulation: Extra layers to keep warm – think a fleece layer, an insulated jacket, and a rain jacket
  4. Illumination: Headlamp that is fully charged/has extra batteries
  5. First-aid supplies: First-aid kit custom to your needs
  6. Fire starter: Waterproof matches, lighter, or fire starter kit for emergencies
  7. Repair kit and tools: Knife or multi-tool, a bit of duct tape
  8. Nutrition: Extra snacks to keep you fueled (my favorites are dried mango, mixed nuts, apple sauce, and bagel sandwiches)
  9. Hydration: Water bottle or hydration bladder, and water filter
  10. Emergency shelter: Emergency blanket or bivy sack
  11.

Remember, these 10 essentials are just the basics to help you tackle unexpected situations and emergencies out on the trail. Always tailor your packing list to fit the specifics of your hike (think weather, length of hike, abilities, wildlife concerns, etc.).

The more you hike, the more you’ll learn! Everyone starts somewhere, and from personal experience, it never hurts to be over prepared.

Here are some extra “essentials” I like to pack:

  1. Bandana: I have a collection of 100% cotton bandanas I use for sweat, snot, and anything else I can think of
  2. Self-defense: Bear spray, emergency whistle, knife, personal alarm, etc.
  3. Portable power bank: To charge my phone in case of emergency
  4. Kula Cloth: A reusable antimicrobial pee cloth (full review here!)
  5. Trash bag: To leave the trail better than I found it
  6. Trekking poles: I love bringing these trekking poles on steep hikes
  7. Camera and tripods: I love packing my polaroid camera, film camera and at least one of my go-to iphone tripods
  8. Binoculars: My favorite binoculars are from Nocs Provisions
  9. Portable chair: If I have time to relax, I’ll bring my favorite little camp chair along
  10. Journal: I love journaling my gratitudes when I’m spending time with Mother Nature
