What To Look For When Buying Women’s Hiking Shirts
When shopping for women’s hot weather hiking shirts, there are several important factors to consider:
Sun Protection: Look for shirts with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) ratings to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. A higher UPF rating offers better protection, especially for hot and sunny hikes.
Material: Choose shirts made from moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabrics. Lightweight and breathable materials, such as polyester or nylon blends, are ideal for staying comfortable during long hikes in hot weather. Merino wool is also a great option, but is on the pricer side.
Fit: Look for shirts that offer a relaxed or slightly loose fit, allowing for easy movement and ventilation. Some hikers prefer a more fitted style, so consider your personal preference when selecting a shirt.
Quality: Durability is key, especially if you’re planning frequent hikes or multi-day adventures. Opt for well-constructed shirts with reinforced seams and quality craftsmanship to ensure they can withstand rugged outdoor conditions.
Sustainability: For eco-conscious hikers, consider shirts made from sustainable materials, such as recycled polyester or organic cotton. Supporting brands that prioritize environmental responsibility and ethical manufacturing practices aligns with Leave No Trace principles and contributes to a more sustainable outdoor community.
More Hot Weather Hiking Gear To Consider
The proper hot weather hiking shirt is just the beginning! Here are more things to consider to protect yourself while hiking:
Wear a sun hat: A wide-brimmed hat like the Sunday Afternoons Islander Hat offers excellent shade for your face, neck, and ears, keeping you comfortable and shielded from the sun’s rays.
Opt for polarized sunglasses: Glare from the sun can be harsh, especially on bright days. Polarized sunglasses, like the $25 pair from Goodr that blocks 100% of UVA and UVB rays, enhance visibility and reduce eye strain.
Apply sunscreen generously: For exposed skin, use sunscreen with at least SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours. If you’re sweating heavily or swimming, more frequent applications will ensure continuous protection.
Keep in mind that the sun’s intensity can vary based on the time of day and your hiking altitude, so always be prepared with proper sun protection, no matter where your adventure takes you!
Hot Weather Hiking Tips
Hot-weather hiking can present various challenges, from high temperatures to potential dehydration or sunburn. However, with proper preparation and taking the necessary precautions, you can have a safe and enjoyable hiking experience!

Here are some tips to help you stay comfortable and hydrated on the trail:
- Avoid the hottest time: The hottest part of the day is in the afternoon, so start your hike early in the morning. If I’m attempting a summer hike in Arizona, I get to the trailhead before the sun rises and am back at my car within an hour.
- Carry enough water: You should not only hydrate before your hot-weather hike but also bring plenty of water on your hike. REI recommends drinking about one half-liter of water per hour of moderate activity in moderate temperatures. I like to hike with a 3-Liter hydration bladder to ensure I bring enough water.
- Recover with electrolytes: When you sweat, you lose essential electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Drinking water alone may not be enough to replace them. Consider adding electrolyte tablets tto your water and snacking on foods high in electrolytes like bananas, nuts, and seeds.
Always check the weather forecast before heading out and listen to your body. If you feel overheated or dehydrated, take a break and rest in a shaded area.
Happy hiking, friends!
